How to Choose a
Sleeping
Bag
A good night's sleep
is essential to an
enjoyable camping
experience. You’ve heard of
the camping joke, "Sure
you get eight hours of
sleep at night, but in 37
increments". Before you
plunk down hundreds of
dollars on the new-fangled
designer-color sleeping
bags out there, make sure
you cover the basics: Ask
yourself these 5 questions
about the sleeping bag you
are considering:
1. Temperature or
comfort rating. Are you
looking for a sleeping bag
for winter camping
or summer camping?
Will it keep you warm?
2. Insulation
type. Down filling is
warm and luxurious. But
you’ll be paying a $300-
$500 more compared to a
synthetics. Another option
is to purchase a synthetic
sleeping bag and use a
portion of the money you
save to buy a sleeping
pad to add
insulation buffer
between the cold ground
and your sleeping
bag.
3. Bag Shape. Do
you like roomy or snug?
Roomy is cooler because it
allows more air circulation
but you may like a warmer,
cozy fit. Do you usually
camp as a couple? Double
bags allow you to zip them
up to fit two. It's a
romantic idea but if either
of you is a restless
sleeper you'll have two
sleep-deprived campers
instead of one. New models
also offer a “Long” version
for campers over 6
feet.
4. eight and
size. Every extra ounce
counts when you are
backpacking. If you are
transporting the
sleeping
bag
in
a car, weight is less
of an issue, unless
cargo space is a
premium. Newer
sleeping bags are
warm, fluffy, but
compacts into a small
bundle that fits even
in a child's
backpack.
5. Manufacturing
Quality. Little things
count – are the zippers the
higher-quality self-healing
kind? Does it have flat
bottoms so your toes can
wiggle around? Does the
fabric look soft but
strong?
A good sleeping bag
will be your best
friend, to lie on when
you watch the stars at
night, to snuggle in when
it rains outside, to
exchange camping
ghost stories and
jokes, to stir up
from when the sun shines
and the birds wake you
up in the morning.
